Job Overview

We’re hiring a skilled Equipment Operator with strong experience in utility excavation.

This role involves operating excavators, backhoes, and other heavy equipment perform general grading and excavation work, and also digging trenches for water, sewer, electric, and stormwater systems. Those with the right background in utilities work will be a key member of our emergency response team, helping customers when water and sewer systems fail or underground utility lines require urgent repair.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with autonomy, thrives under pressure, and is looking for overtime pay and meaningful work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate excavators, backhoes, and skid steers for trenching, grading, and backfilling

  • Excavate safely around existing underground utilities (water, sewer, electric, etc.)

  • Respond to emergency service calls (after hours/weekends as needed)

  • Read plans, locate utilities, and dig with precision to avoid costly damage

  • Assist in site prep, erosion control, drainage installations, and hardscaping

  • Haul equipment and materials using CDL-A vehicles when needed

  • Maintain equipment and perform basic troubleshooting or repairs

  • Work closely with the owner and team to complete projects efficiently and safely


Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in excavation and trenching work

  • Proficient with excavators and backhoes—comfortable in tight residential sites

  • Experience with utility trenching (water, sewer, electric) strongly preferred

  • Valid Class A CDL required for high end of pay scale

  • Ability to work independently and handle emergency repair jobs

  • Strong understanding of job site safety and underground utility best practices

  • Able to pass background check and drug screening

The ideal candidate has the following in addition to the requirements noted above:

  • 5+ years in utility excavation

  • Current CDL A with no restrictions

  • Holds or has experience to test for Utility Contractors License (min 2000 hrs verifiable utilities excavation experience)

Construction Laborer

Job Overview

As a Construction Laborer at Severn Excavation, you will be essential to our field operations, supporting tasks across excavation, grading, water & sewer, and hardscape projects in Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties.

You’ll work closely with the owner and team to ensure safe, efficient, and accurate project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with ground excavation, grading, brush clearing, and debris removal

  • Support utility trenching for water, sewer, and electric installations

  • Assist with drainage and soil erosion control

  • Help install retaining walls, patios, and other hardscaping elements

  • Maintain job site cleanliness, tools, and overall safety compliance

  • Operate or assist with small earthmoving equipment and hand tools as needed

  • Follow direction from the owner and team to keep projects moving efficiently
